18 Weeks

This week marks 18 weeks in our pregnancy. Who would have ever imagined being at this point? Certainly not me. Dealing with infertility for as long as we did, the emotions just don't go away. My heart is sensitive to others around me battling infertility and loss. I never thought I could say this, but I am grateful to have experienced our journey. There is a certain compassion that comes from dealing with infertility and loss, that those who have not experienced one or both, can't understand. The empathy is deep.

In our case of infertility, the hurt and longing for something we never had is a specific grief. For those who have experienced loss, that is a specific grief. In our loss of our adoption, that was a different type of grief. And yet, through it all, there is hope, love, and support from the Lord, family, and friends. Once I was finally able to share with people, it became easier to talk about. My friends and family new what to ask, because I would help to guide them. Being able to share with the people I love and trust was very freeing.

Our 5 1/2 year journey has brought us here - being able to share one of God's greatest gifts - the gift of life. I think of our long awaited gift, and how the Lord has turned my mourning into dancing, and I am overcome with sweet joy. This week is our 18th week in our pregnancy, and today we should find out what we are having. I was like a little kid the night before school and was too excited to sleep - at least some of the night.

The Sweetest Miracle

Hi all,

For those of you who have followed our journey the last 5 1/2 years, we thank you for your love, prayers, and support. The continued encouragement is such a blessing to us. Over the past 6 months, many people asked us where we stand in the adoption process. We kept saying "God is telling us to wait. We don't know why, but there is such a peace about us waiting." For those of you who know me, you recognize how difficult this can be for me. Even though more waiting went against everything my flesh wanted ... we waited.

Fast forward to April 9, 2011, a day I shall never forget. This is the day I took a pregnancy test, and for the first time ever, it was positive. In shock, I began crying. I ran into the other room to get Chris, and we went back in to look at the test. We both began to praise the Lord.

After a couple months of silence, we believe it is time to make our news public. We are 14 weeks pregnant! I am grateful for this incredible gift. Looking back on our journey of infertility, medications, a surgery, and a failed adoption, there were times where my heart hurt and my flesh was weak. Because of our God, I can look at our journey with awe and gratitude while experiencing the joy of His miracles.

God has been and is at work in my life! He is good! His grace is sufficient!

1 Samuel 2:2 - "There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God."

Changes

For those of you still following this blog, I have some changes to announce. I started this blog sharing our story of infertility and my passion for adoption. I began making items to help raise funds for families wanting to adopt. Although the monetary amount was small, we helped 2 families last year. The blog moved towards sharing our adoption journey, which has been a process in itself, and continues to move ahead slowly.

In order to streamline things, this blog will now be about our adoption journey only. We will keep the blog name Journeymark - marking our adoption journey and continuing to share the updates with those who care for us.

I have recently changed the business name to Adella Marie and plan to launch around May 1st. Our desired goal is to help families in their adoption process. With these changes come new products, new designs, and a fresh start, just in time for spring.

I will continue to update as things progress.

Starting Over

Happy New Year to you! I can't believe it has been 2 months since I have written. As many of you know, so much has happened.

We had a failed adoption back in October, and needed time to grieve this loss. I have mentioned the possibility of a moratorium (a halt on international adoptions from Ukraine) and the Ukrainian parliament continues to move towards making this vote pass. With this in mind, Chris and I have decided not to continue our adoption process from Ukraine, but move forward with a domestic adoption.

We are having to start the process all over - our home study has to be updated, we have to find a new agency, and we are thinking of adopting a child from the U.S. foster system. Of course, we are leaving everything open to what God has planned.

I am attaching the video clip from our silent auction. The photos/video were provided by our dear friend, Sharon Miller with Sharon Miller photography. We love her work and she did a great job capturing the joy of the night.

Latest with Ukraine Adoption

Hey everyone,

We heard from our agency today with the following update:
"During the Thanksgiving break, we received new, updated information directly from Ukraine, that the judiciary committee of Parliament rejected bill 4313 after coming to the conclusion that the bill is in contradiction with other Articles in the Family Code of Ukraine. This took place after Joint Council sent us the overview of events, and we assume that this is why the new development was not mentioned in the above notice. Certainly, the opinion of the judiciary committee is very important, and always has a big influence on the final decisions of Parliament.

We also were notified that Parliament has scheduled a final vote to take place on December 16th. A large group of lawyers, including some who work as adoption coordinators, are preparing a petition to be presented prior to this final hearing. The purpose of this petition is to emphasize the importance of keeping international adoption open without any disruptions."

The situation continues to change. Pray that December 16th will mark the end of this uncertainty, and Ukrainian adoptions will continue. These children need a home, love, and a family to call their own. Please continue to pray over us as we are trying to figure out how to move forward - with Ukraine or a domestic adoption.

Waiting

Hey everyone,

We have decided to wait out the next few weeks until a possible 2nd vote from the Ukrainian parliament may or may not take place. Here is the latest from the US Department of State.

The Ukrainian legislature is in the process of voting on a bill that would suspend all intercountry adoptions from countries without bilateral agreements with Ukraine, including adoptions from the United States. The bill passed a first reading and vote, but must still pass a second reading and be signed into law by the president. The second reading could take place in the next few weeks. If the bill passes the second reading, it may be signed into law as early as the end of 2010. The draft bill appears to include suspension of all adoptions in progress.

Another Step Back

Well, just as we were about to send off our Dossier and fee to our agency today, we found out the Ukranian parliament voted to put a moratorium on international adoptions. Unfortunately, it passed. Thankfully, because of finding out through another blog, we did not submit our paperwork and fee.

Here is what we know - we are recieving conflicting information for how long it may actually take. It may be 6 months or less. With our paperwork being submitted soon, we were guessing our travel date might be
in February. If it takes less than 6 months, we will be cutting it so very close, and spend thousands of dollars with no guarantee.

From our agency -
"As of today Ukraine is not closed; there are a few proposals that were discussed. We are communicating with our coordinator who is checking everything, and will let you know the latest tomorrow."

We definitely need your prayers, guidance, and feedback. This has been the most emotional roller coaster, and all happening within the last month. Please pray for the many orphans, not just in Ukraine, but all over the world, as we approach Orphan Sunday on the 7th.

Tomorrow, once we receive an update, we will take the time to pray and decide how to proceed. I will update as soon as I can.

3 Steps Forward

Hi all,

It was 2 weeks ago from yesterday we found out the little girl we thought would be ours, is not. In the process of adoption, you understand the risks involved intellectually, but your heart still gets caught up in the thick of it. Chris and I have grieved differently, as expected, but the encouragement from God, our family, and dear friends helps us. At the Tapestry conference, we met with friends going through similar situations, both in adoption and foster care, and while all of us are hurting in some way, we recognize this is what God has called us to do. And so, we press on.

Chris and I are going to continue to move forward to adopt from Ukraine. Our paperwork is almost complete, and will send what is apostilled to Ukraine within the next week. The last few items needing to be apostilled will hopefully be sent within the next month. Once everything is received and translated, we should have a travel date a couple months out.

I like what Chris said -"Do we fear what could go wrong in adoption or do we continue knowing God is in control and move forward with what's in front of us? We will move forward.

Tapestry Conference 2010

Hey everyone,

Tomorrow we will attend the Tapestry Conference at IBC. We went last year, and it was so informative. Great speakers, great sessions, and great resources to take away for adoption and foster care.

My emotions are still up and down, but I believe we need to go. We are signed up for the sessions on parenting an adopted child. After the past couple weeks, this may be hard, so I am asking for your prayers.

Sad News

Chris and I have some sad news to share with you. While I was in Austin on Tuesday getting our paperwork apostilled, I received an email from our adoption agency. They stated the owner of the agency needed to speak with us ASAP. My first thought was "this can't be good." I immediately called Chris and forwarded him the message. Thankfully, I had one of my girlfriends with me along for the ride.

I finished getting the paperwork signed, and received a phone call from the owner of our adoption agency at 1:30. She told us that the little girl we thought would be our daughter is no longer available for adoption. Her father had been in prison, was released, and did not want to waive his parental rights. Our hearts ache over losing the child we thought we were going to bring home, and at the same time we know God has a plan. We just can't see it yet.

We know we will continue to move forward with adoption. We just don't know how that looks right now. We are not sure if we continue with Ukraine, another country, or domestic.

Please continue to pray for this sweet precious girl. We do not know much about the circumstances to which she is going back to, but God knows. We believe her father must be showing some kind of love, as he is fighting to keep her. Pray for her protection, for love to be poured over her, and for someone to share Christ with her and her father.

Please pray for us as we grieve this loss - for wisdom, clarity, and timing to move forward with the adoption process. We will be speaking with our agency this week and asking some hard questions. Pray that through this pain we will glorify God.

I Can't Keep Quiet About the Silent Auction

Hey all,
Well, it has been some time since my last update, and ao many AMAZING things have happened!

We scheduled a silent auction to be held at our dear friends' house this past weekend. Once we started to share about the auction to raise funds for our adoption, God did the rest. Actually, He was completely in control the whole time. He allowed so many people to be a part of this event by using their time, talents, and treasures. He even allowed people we don't even know to contribute.

For instance, let me tell you about our invitations. Our friends offered to print the invitations for us, and took them to Extravaganza here in Flower Mound. When the owner of the store read the invitation, she mentioned they had adopted from Russia. It was so close to her heart, that she offered to print both the invitations and address labels for free. How generous! Then, our friends went back to pick up the invitations that afternoon. The owner asked where we were adopting from and they told her we are adopting from Ukraine. She told them her husband is from Ukraine and to tell us if we need help translating with our daughter, they are right here in Flower Mound to help. Ok, seriously? How many Ukrainians live here in Flower Mound? Maybe more than I realize, but God led us to them.

Would you like another example of God's provision? I work for a gourmet food company, and part of my job is selling at the Dallas Market. I love it and have made some very sweet friends by having the opportunity to work at various shows across the country. At the September market, my sweet friends did something that blew us away. I mentioned the auction, and they took it from there. We had items donated to go in 18 (that's right - 18) HUGE and BEAUTIFUL gift baskets valued between $100-$200 each. Ladies, if you are reading this, we can't thank you enough for what you did. Our hearts are so full of gratitude.

Some other great items donated included a painting by talented artist and friend Brice McCasland (visit http://bricemccasland.com/), lower-level tickets to the Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks, NASCAR tickets with pit access, a week's vacation at a lake house, a week's vacation at mountain home in Colorado, chiropractic consultations, a haircut and color, candles, home decor, more gift baskets, and so much more. All together, we had 44 items donated.

On Friday,it was time to get everything set up. Our friends who hosted the event at their home made gumbo, brisket sandwiches, brie, bread pudding, chocolate sheet cake, and so many other incredible foods. We had other friends make cheese rings, fruit trays, and meatballs with a pepper brandy sauce. The decorations and center pieces were put together by a very dear friend. They were beautiful and I can't wait to share pictures with you.

Saturday was a busy, busy, day with a lot of last minute things to be done. After helping to prepare all day, Chris and I left at 3:30 to get ready, and when we returned at 5:20, everything had come together and looked incredible. God provided perfect weather for the outdoor event. It was such a wonderful time of fellowship and love. Dinner started at 6:00 and the auction soon after. Another sweet friend did such a great job organizing the auction, and made everything so smooth. We had another friend taking pictures, so we will share as soon as she is able to get them uploaded.

With all the help, donations, and planning of so many people, we were able to raise $3,400.00 towards our next $4,000.00 fee. Even as I write this, I am in tears. We are so overwhelmed by what God has done and continues to do by blessing us with the people in our lives. Even the people we don't know. Everyone gets to be a part of our daughter's homecoming. We see the generosity.We see the love of Christ.

Tomorrow, I drive to Austin with a dear sister in Christ to get our paperwork apostilled. Then, we will send it off to our agency later this week. They will forward all the paperwork to Ukraine to start the translation process. Please continue to pray over the process and over the orphans.

The Risk of International Adoption

We found out last Thursday that the Ukrainian Parliament was set to vote today on a moratorium for foreign adoptions. Since then, we have prayed and prayed and prayed some more. We knew going into an international adoption that laws could change at anytime, but we had no experience with it until now.

We received an update from our coordinator in Ukraine regarding the vote for a moratorium. The Parliament has postponed the vote. Our coordinator said that it could be postponed for a few months or for a year. At this point it's hard to tell. In any case, she feels it is unlikely the moratorium will pass. However, we are finishing our dossier as soon as possible so we can send it to Ukraine and get it registered.

We are so grateful and we know that many families feel the same way. Please continue to pray for those who are in the process of their adoption, for the children waiting to be adopted, and for us to get our dossier registered soon.

As We Wait

Hey everyone,

The adoption paperwork is moving along. We are completing what is required for the Dossier and INS paperwork this weekend. As we wait, there are many conversations in our home about when we might travel, what the process will look like once in Ukraine, and the day we are able to call ourselves "Daddy and Mommy."

As we wait, we are in the beginning stages of decorating the room, sweet friends are helping plan another fundraising event and a shower, and Chris is writing songs that take my breath away. There are times where I feel like pinching myself saying, "is this for real?" Yep, it sure is, and God is leading us every step of the way.

Our continued prayer includes asking for God's wisdom and patience. We pray Christ will be made known in all that we do and say, and for His joy to radiate. We pray for our child, the orphanage where our child might be, and the other children we will meet. We pray over how we might be able to get involved with an organization working with orphans in Ukraine and how we can be a part of supporting/encouraging/serving alongside them.

During the past 6 weeks, we have been humbled and overwhelmed with the giving of prayers, time, and financial donations by our family and friends. God has used many people in our lives to help us in our adoption process. We had a dear friend mention Ephesians 3:20 to us, and we are now using this verse to guide us in every step of this process. "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us".

We had a HUGE multi-family garage sale on August 7th, and were blown away with what was donated to us. Check it out - we were in our front yard, driveway, and garage.

We are so grateful to have wonderful friends who served so faithfully, and never complained about the 103 temperature. We can't THANK YOU enough for all your hard work, energy, and time on a Saturday morning!!! (and the week prior with pick-ups)

With what was raised at the garage sale and with what has been donated, we have $3,500.00 to go towards our next $4,000.00 fee. God is so faithful!

Home Study Time

Time races sometimes.

And... the home study visit arrives on our door step this Saturday. I feel there are still so many things to prepare for. In my "perfect world of perfection", I like order. I prefer things to be just so. I prefer a clean house, a manicured lawn, and checking off items on my to-do list. Let's just say I am learning to let that all go.

While we will do our best to have our house sparkling, is that really what matters in the process of an adoption home visit? Definitely not.

Although it may be time for the home study, and I don't feel 100% prepared, time is precious. I desire not to get caught up in the unknown, the uncontrollable, and the unimportant, but to prepare my heart and mind with the love of Christ. It is only because of Him that our love is able to flow out to others. I am so grateful to be going through an adoption and understanding more than ever what it means to be loved by God.

I want to focus on my time with God and what He desires to teach me this week, time with Chris and continuing the beautiful conversations we are having, and time with friends and family. Sounds perfect to me.

Paperwork Process

Hey everyone,

Things have been moving quickly, as far as paperwork goes. We have a doctor's appointment scheduled Friday, July 16th, to get the last bit of paperwork completed for the home study. Once our home study agency has the letter from our doctor, they will schedule the home visit.

Regarding our dossier process, our adoption agency will have the paperwork to us within the next couple weeks. Once we receive the paperwork, there are several forms we have to have complete - another letter from our doctor, another employment letter, a letter stating we own our home, etc. Each form will then have to be notarized and apostilled. I had to look up the definition of apostilled. Basically, it is one step above a notary. It states the notary is in fact a notary for the state in which you live.

It has now been 1 month since we began the process. Please continue to pray for us as we move forward.

Adoption is Moving Forward

Hey everyone,

here is a quick update in our adoption process. First, a change in country has taken place. We are adopting from the Ukraine. Without a doubt, God is leading us to adopt our child from this country, and we are thrilled. We have decided to adopt an older child ranging in age from 6-8.

Second, our application with the agency was approved today, making this a joyful day for us. The next steps are to send in the retainer agreement to the agency, while simultaneously getting our home study completed.

Love bears all things

Hey everyone,

I want to share a verse that has grabbed my heart. I Corinthians 13:7 - Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (ESV) It's a small verse that contains a powerful message.

As Chris and I begin the adoption process, we are reminded that the love we have for others brings out the best in us and in the people we are around. Love also hopes the best for other people and is not measured by actions alone. In verse 6, we read "love rejoices with truth." Love rejoices!!!

Before and After Shots

Hey there,

I want to share some before and after shots of some updates we have done around the house. First, the kitchen. We have had red paint in our kitchen for years and wanted to go with something more neutral. A friend, who is a very talented decorator, recommended a slightly darker taupe to enhance the neutral tones in our kitchen/living area. It turned out great. The last thing we need to do is add our hardware to the cabinets.

Notice in the pictures, it turns from day to night. I just had to finish it in the same day.

Changing the color on our island book shelves

Next, I found this dresser at a garage sale. It's in excellent condition and made of maple wood. I paid $40.00 for it. I gave it a light sanding, painted 2 coats of this beautiful, light honey milk paint, added hardware, and now we have a new dresser for our guest room.

Silence

Hey everyone,

I can't believe it has taken me this long to write something. As for the silence, I have been so busy over the past couple of months and time goes so quickly. Remember when our parents told us that as we get older, time would go by faster? Well, they were right.

As quickly as time is going by, I'm reminded of getting older. The big 35 is approaching in the next few months, and I have to say, I thought things would look so different by now. As a young girl, and dreamer, I believed I would have two kids by the time I was 30. I would be a "young, hip mom", having play dates, going to kid's soccer games, and enjoying birthday parties.

Dealing with infertility definitely changes my way of thinking. I do believe I will be a mother one day. I do believe it will be one of the greatest gifts God will allow for us. I also believe it will have nothing to do with me, but everything to do with praising our God who will make this possible. Whether it is through having our own child naturally or through adoption, the child or children will be made by God in His perfect timing. He is the creator of all things, not us. It is just difficult to wait, and wait, and wait some more. Especially as you watch your friends children getting ready to start kindergarten, and you were a part of praying over them and their pregnancy 6 years prior.

As another mother's day passes and father's day approaches, it is a great reminder to appreciate all the blessings in our lives, whether Chris and I get to celebrate those days or not. I recognize how difficult these days can be to someone dealing with infertility. At church, mothers and fathers are recognized by having them stand and receive gifts. I am not saying this is wrong, but to someone who desires to be a mother or father, it can be a very sensitive and emotional day.

So, this year on mother's day, I was able to acknowledge all the blessings in my life. I am alive because God allows me to breathe. I am a daughter of the one true God and am able to share the love of Christ with others. I am grateful to be married to such an incredible man who gets me. I can share my experience of infertility with other women, and cry with them when necessary. I can express to others that I still have hope and faith to become a mother because God is not limited to what we can do or what medicines we have to take. I am blessed with my family and friends who love and support us. And on and on I could go.

With silence, I appreciate all that God teaches me. I recognize dealing with this emotional grief, I am loved.

May you be blessed and loved over this holiday weekend. May we recognize the freedom we have in this country and thank our troops for their service.

Our Adoption Journey Begins

We have decided to pursue our adoption from Bulgaria.

We are in the beginning stages and will complete the application soon. Next, will be our home study and contract agreement. As we begin this next step in our lives, we would appreciate your prayers and any words of wisdom you have to offer.

The money we need to raise begins with the home study, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, because it depends on which company does the home study. The contract agreement, once completed, is shipped via Fed Ex along with a $3,000 check. The total cost of fees with this agency is $15,500.00 plus the cost of travel, translator, additional fees, etc. As we move along in the process, we will keep you updated. This process can take up to 2 years, so we trust and know that God will provide on every level.

We are excited, anxious, and ready. We believe God will guide us every step of the way, and that the child we pray over and for, will one day come home.

Spring Time

Hey there,

well it's been a couple weeks since I have written and it is now the first part of Spring. Can you believe it? Where does the time go? Oh, and Chris and I drove home in a snowy, wintry mix last night. Texas weather is hard to beat!!!

I love this time of year (other than the allergy attacks), watching flowers bloom, leaves grow on trees, and everything snapping back to life. It feels like a new beginning, in more ways than one. I have been consumed with adoption lately, hence the reason for my delay in updates. While researching adoption, I learned that dealing with infertility is something to thank God for. I am not saying I like it, or that my emotions are not all over the place at times, but I don't feel like I have been honoring God through this process in the way that would glorify Him.

I have asked the questions, "Why us?" and "Why can't we?", which is not wrong, but the questions can't stop there. I have learned to ask the question, "God, how can you use this struggle in our lives for your purpose?" Asking this has helped changed my focus and allows me to recognize there is a reason in battling infertility. While we may never know the answer, I know it's going to be okay.

So, as we start Spring, and begin to see life blooming around us, it's going to be okay.

Some Questions

Hey everyone,

Happy Friday to you! Over the past two weeks, Chris and I have begun to discuss the possibility of domestic adoption. At this point, we are continuing to keep an open mind on domestic and international, but there is something exciting about the possibility of bringing home an infant.

I have to admit that I feel at a loss concerning domestic adoption. The decision of choosing an agency to work with (I know I have mentioned this several times, but it is such a major decision) to open adoption, semi-open, or closed adoption.

Open adoption - the birth mother, birth father, and adoptive parents meet several times and continue to exchange information and remain in contact with each other

Semi-open - refers to an adoption where the birthparents and adoptive parents will meet once or twice, know each other on a first name basis, and might exchange pictures and information as the child grows

Closed - the birth mother and birth father are kept anonymous, along with the adoptive parents being kept anonymous

For those of you who have experienced domestic adoption, I would love to know about the agency you decided to work with and whether you chose open, semi-open, or closed adoption. I learn something new each day and appreciate further the depths of how we have been adopted into the family of God.

As Ephesians 1:3-6 says-
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves (Ephesians 1:3-6).

Adoption Update #2

Hey everyone,

We are continuing to pray over agencies, the country to adopt from, when to start the application, financial help for the adoption, etc. Tomorrow, we are attending an informational adoption/foster care meeting at The Village Church. We are looking forward to meeting other families who have adopted, or are in the process of their adoption, at our home church.

I think it will be a great way for us to find out ways to serve the families in our area, as well as obtaining some helpful information for us.

As most of you know, I have been following an amazing family for several years now. Stefanie and her husband Chris, have such a heart for orphans and special needs adoptions. They are one of the couples who helped inspire Chris and I to consider adoption a couple years ago.

Stefanie and two other women started Wild Olive Tees. You have seen their tees on my blog since I began blogging and this time, they are doing something very special.

They have designed a new tee and all the proceeds will go to Haiti. That is right - 100% of all the money earned from the sale of this tee, will benefit the people of Haiti. The Hope tee is featured below.

Dillon Informational Meeting

This morning, Chris and I attended our first informational meeting in researching adoption agencies. The meeting was held by Dillon International. We walked away more encouraged and strengthened in knowing this is the plan God has designed to grow our family.

The couple leading the meeting shared about their personal experience with Dillon, and bringing their daughter home from Korea. They did a great job relating to those with children and those who have battled with infertility, as they experienced this in their own journey.

We gained more knowledge of how the adoption process will work through Dillon and narrowed the country down to India. We will continue to pray, every day and every step of the way, but India seems to be where God keeps leading us. Since our first mission trip to India in 06-07, our love for the Indian culture and people continues to grow.

So, if we decide to use Dillon, the next step will be to fill out the first application. We want to talk/meet with the social worker overseeing India. The wait time can take up to 3 - 3 1/2 years, and that is from now. Whatever the wait time, it will be God's timing. Always perfect.

A verse that touched my heart this week - Proverbs 13:12 NIV - Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

First Steps

I love how God works in mysterious ways, don't you? We had different people recommend Dillon International as an agency to check out. Although I have them listed as a reference link, it is different when you begin the process yourselves. So, thank you to all of you who are being used to walk alongside us in our first steps of adopting the sweet child God has for us.

We RSVP'd for a meeting with Dillon next Saturday morning, February 6th, here in the DFW area. We look forward to learning more about this organization and having some questions answered. As we begin to look at agencies, please pray we would not get in the way of what God has planned. I will continue to keep you posted.

Hey everyone,

I would love to receive information from you regarding adoption agencies. As Chris and I begin to look at agencies, we have several in mind, but would love feedback from those who have experienced the process.

We are looking at adopting internationally. The countries we are interested in are India, China, and Russia. Of course, Haiti now comes to mind. We really are trying to keep it open and allow God to lead us, but we need to focus in at some point to move forward.

Update Regarding Eye Situation

I was finally able to get a second opinion on my eyes yesterday concerning my Pseudopapilledema (or in human terms, swelling around my optic nerve in both eyes.) It was a very good report. The Dr. leaned more towards the option that I was born with the swelling, which makes it confusing, and they just want to take precautionary measures. 3 MRI's and over a year later, you can imagine my relief.

At this point I am to follow up with my optometrist every 3-4 months. She will take pictures of my eye and optic nerve to see if anything changes. Changes could include white flecks or hemorrrhaging around my optic nerve, neither of which sound fun.

this is a blog I have been following for some time now and a recent post was very moving. I appreciate so much the reminder of serving those who are battling infertility, including myself. I have come to understand the importance of sharing how I am feeling, and not shutting people out of my journey. I know that we who struggle can serve others who are in the midst of their battle, and walk alongside them in prayer and support.

If you have time, this moving video is one to watch. It captures feelings that one struggles with during infertility. I loved the song stating "I fell apart, but I got back up again." There have been many times when I have thought, "just keep moving, keep moving forward." I am excited to share this post with you today. My heart is anxious to see what will happen over the next couple days.

Jennifer and Joe created myadoptionwebsite.com after the adoption of their little girl from China. Here is a small excerpt of what they do in their own words.

Chris and I started to follow families on this site about 2 years ago and have enjoyed the personal stories. Also, the websites are gorgeous.

They are hosting a fundraiser this Wednesday, November 18th, to raise support for An Orphans Wish. An Orphan's Wish is "a unique project in the Guangxi province of China. It is located outside the picturesque city of Guilin. It's a very special place for orphaned children."

Hey all,

It was a fun and busy weekend. I wanted to make Christmas cards this weekend and decided to enter the Taylored Expressions Sketch Challenge. I made two completely different cards for the challenge.

The first card is for Christmas. I used Kraft, Spring Moss, and Vintage Cream paper from PTI and paired with the 2008 Holiday Tag Collection stamps. I used some beautiful ribbon I had and highlighted with diamond stickles.

For this second card, I used Raspberry Fizz, Sweet Blush, and Aqua Mist paper from PTI. I again stamped with the 2008 Holiday Tag Collection using chocolate ink and stamped Thank You with Aqua Mist using a wooden stamp. I tied Raspberry Fizz Vintage buttons on twine and highlighted with some holiday ribbon from Michaels.

So much fun. I will have more cards later for you to check out. Have a wonderful Monday!

Fall Wishes

After battling with 4 years of infertility, we are moving forward with a decision that brings peace to our hearts. We are moving forward with adoption.

A couple weeks ago, Chris and I went to the 2009 Tapestry Adoption and Foster Care Conference held at Irving Bible Church. This was an incredible opportunity for us to hear from speakers who have experienced adopting children, both domestic and international. We learned more about the beauty of adoption, financial resources, the realities and myths of adoption, and heard from a dynamic speaker, Dr. Karyn Purvis. Dr. Purvis brings over 10 years experience in working with adoptive families and foster families. You can learn more about Dr. Karyn Purvis by clicking on the Empowered To Connect link under my resource column to the right.

There are many things to think about, agencies to research, deciding on domestic or international adoption, the financial responsibility, etc. However, there is something wonderful in knowing that our loving God is walking beside us and ahead of us, and will guide us in every step of the journey.

Here is another great challenge from Dawn McVey. She is great about challenging you to use new colors and they just seem to enhance any cards or projects you are working on.

This is the latest card. Using Cream cardstock as the background, I stamped the Raspberry Fizz cardstock with a stamp from the Vintage Label collection at http://www.papertreyink.com/ . Next, I stamped the Kraft cardstock with a stamp from the Vintage Label Collection and a sentiment from the 2008 Holiday Tag Collection. Again, from http://www.papertreyink.com/ . I added green ribbon to the chocolate cardstock and finished using a Raspberry Fizz button to tie the bow. Simple, but I love it.

Update Regarding Medication

Over a year ago, God gave me the idea for Journeymark. I often asked, "Why us? We don't have kids (yet), and we have not adopted (yet)." We didn't know then the road we would take.

After a couple of months taking Letrozole and Progesterone, I just finished my second cycle. After much prayer, many mood swings, and a three hour talk with my husband, we decided to stop these medications. We trust and know our God is so much bigger than medication, and if He so chooses to allow me to get pregnant, He will. We have a wonderful doctor, and know we live in an era where medicine and technology are superb, but I have to question all the medications I am putting into my body.

With my crazy membranes attaching to my optic nerve, I am taking a medication for glaucoma (even though I don't have glaucoma), a steroid for an eye infection, a drug to stimulate my ovaries (that is also prescribed for breast cancer patients), and 200 mg of progesterone. This does not include my daily allergy medications. And today, I went to the doctor to find out I have an upper respiratory infection and a sinus infection. Guess what I got, more meds to take. This all blends into some toxic stew I'd rather decrease than add to.

Our search for answers about getting pregnant definitely brings grief we never expected to deal with. But most important, it reminds us of the hope we have in an all powerful God to provide what He knows is best for us, despite what our limited vision can discern. Please pray for us as we embark on the next chapter of our lives.

WCMD - Japan Card Challenge #1

This challenge has been such a wonderful learning experience for me. I was so excited to share with many friends just how supportive and encouraging and talented you women are. {Hugs}

Below is the last challenge I will participate in. I knew I wanted to finish a card with inspiration. And so, I was inspired by this incredible pen drawing of a cherry blossom, from my brother Josh Love. The detail and the colors just pop. I added this gorgeous fabric I have to make tote bags, black and gold cardstock, and project is complete.... whew!!!

WCMD Australia - Card Challenge #4

So, I decided to try one of the adoption cards for this challenge and use the outline of small white dots. I really like the way it turned out.

I used Papertrey Cardstock in chocolate brown and aqua mist, a scrap piece of cream paper for the top stamp, stamps from the Martha Stewart Collection, and for the dots (a glue pen with white opaque embossing powder). I added a touch of ribbon I use to make baby blankets and a brad from Recollections.

Nichole's challenges at www.papertreyink.com have been so great to be a part of. My sweet friend Sharon introduced me and we purchased supplies together from this company. I fell in love with all they have to offer. Especially for someone like me who is new to this world of creativity.

Memories of India

Over the past three years, Chris and I traveled to India twice and have had our world view changed.

We fell in LOVE with the people of India. I have never experienced such hospitality in my life, and I grew up in the hospitable south. The Indian people we met often gave of the very little they had, whether sharing a bag of chips, a bottle of coke, or serving the best chai tea I have ever had (beats Starbucks any day).

But overall, it was the poor, homeless, and orphaned children who stole my heart. I wanted to share some pictures. I will never forget the girls in this first photo. The older sister is caring for her younger sister. She asked for food, not money. The people in our group gave her the food we had in our backpacks and she immediately began to feed her sister some crackers.

This child is in one of the slum houses. As you can see, no pants, very cold outside.

Raising Funds for the Loucks Family

Changing Launch Date to Oct. 15

One long month

For anyone who has taken or takes clomid, letrozole, or any other med to help stimulate fertility, then wait a few days, take progesterone and wait again - did it not seem like the LONGEST MONTH ever? I count each and every day, actually keeping it on a calendar because I get confused on which day I am on, and wonder "could this be the thing that works?"

My question to you - anyone who might be reading or understanding this - What were some things you did to keep your mind off the long month (wait)?

Wonderful Surprises

A couple weeks ago I went to the bank, and as I walked out a lady approached me and asked, "Is this your car?" My response... "Yes, why?" She accidentally backed into my vehicle, parked, and was kind enough to not drive off and wait for me. The damage was not terrible, but enough to have the paint chips, a little ding, and a small tear fixed.

I was able to get her insurance information, call in a claim, and was referred to a paint and body shop by the insurance company. What is the wonderful surprise? God's complete provision.

It was Tuesday morning, and I walk into the Paint & Body Shop. It is family owned and they have been in business for 26 years. I walk in and have to wait for the rental car company to pick me up. While waiting (for a little over an hour), I talk with the owners about many things. One thing in particular - kids. They talk about their grand kids and how they adore their time with them. And then I was asked, "do you have any kids?" I am so thankful to be at the point where I can share with others what God is doing in our lives. So, that is exactly what I did. I spoke about Journeymark and what the purpose of the business is, and do you know what God did? He provided something for the business.

The sweet lady mentions she quilts and wants to offer baby quilts for Journeymark. I am completely in awe and say, "I would be so grateful." On Friday, I went to pick up my vehicle. She had completed the top sections of two quilts, and I love them. They are so very sweet, and something that she will be able to bless others with by using her gift.

You see where I am going with this? My car was hit, while parked, for me to file a claim and have the insurance company suggest two options for me to take my car to get fixed. I chose this particular shop, waited for over an hour on the rental car company, and now, Journeymark will offer baby quilts. How precious God's surprises are in our lives. Be sure not to miss them.

I am so grateful to learn the results of my pathology report came back with good news. No uterine cancer. Thank you Lord! What next? I have something called Luteal Phase Defect. In other words, it is a failure of my uterine lining being in the right place for the baby to attach itself. I will begin taking Letrozole, a medication to help stimulate my ovaries, and progesterone. I look forward to what may happen over the next few months.

I learn more every day about my faith growing and strengthening. Not because of anything I have done, but because of God taking me through challenges I never thought I would face. Over these past few years, I have held onto God's hope each day. Some days tougher than others, but always seeing how He works it out for His glory.

Even now, holding onto His hope, no matter what the outcome, He will be praised.

Surgery Is Over

Close to 4 years later, we have some progress concerning our infertility issues. I feel so grateful, I want to share. Why share this? With infertility, you can't give or gain enough support. By sharing my story with other women, I hope others will see they are not alone regarding their questions, hurt, pain, and more questions.

About a month ago, I found out I had 2 polyps in my uterus. (Had - meaning I am now polyp free). I underwent a hysteroscopy this past Thursday, which in lay terms means going under, having the polyps removed, and waking up with no clue about what just happened. I received great care from my wonderful OBGYN to the team of nurses and anesthesiologists at Baylor Frisco. I'm very thankful my nurse administering the needle into the vein in my hand waited for my OBGYN to distract me before doing it. She had skills.

I did have a cool encounter in the recovery room after my surgery. Barely awake, I heard my sweet nurse say to me, "I have had to go through some of this myself." She mentioned something about her children and I asked, "How many do you have?" She said she adopted twin girls from Russia. Not only did the Lord put someone in that moment who could relate with where my heart has been for awhile now, He also allowed me to share with her our plans to adopt. It was a spiritual comfort during a time of physical discomfort.

Now what do we do now the surgery is over?

I am low on my progesterone levels, which I'll discuss with my OBGYN in a couple of weeks. The low progesterone levels seems to be more common these days in women my age from what I understand. I look forward to having my body feel normal again, and I am hopeful for whatever God has planned for us.

What is this blog about? Giving love, support, and care to those who are adopting and the adopted. Simple, right?

One look at my profile and you might realize I'm a sucker for happy endings in books and movies. My husband Chris and I were married over 10 years ago. It didn't take long for people to begin asking us when we were going to have children. "Did you really just ask that?" I thought every time. I soon learned to rattle off a safe answer. "About three years". That seemed to satisfy the masses while I went on learning from and enjoying the times we had together as husband and wife (even the tough ones).

We had talked about having kids before marriage (the talking, not the having). Even then, we said we were both open to adoption. Well, my constant reassuring to those who asked about "three years" soon hit another "three years". With other things to focus on (jobs, school, etc.), we never took time to wonder if we would have any issue getting pregnant. Over the past four years, infertility has become an unwelcome roommate in our home. Three OBGYNs later, we feel we are finally getting some answers and a plan to move forward. Although we are still hopeful for the chance to conceive and give birth naturally, over this time, God has nurtured another plan within our hearts. This plan has everything to do with adoption.

We currently pray about, read about, and talk to those who have adopted. While celebrating the adoption anniversary of their daughter with some friends, I went to look for a card which would say something meaningful about adoption. I found nothing. In this moment, I felt God was telling me to do something about that. I knew I was to make cards and gifts which specifically mark the journey of adoption. Soon after, through prayer, counsel, trial and error, God began to reveal more of how I was to go about this new endeavor.

In researching adoption, most families are not able to adopt due to the lack of funds. Adoption costs can range from $8k domestically to $30k internationally. For someone desiring to adopt, the cost seems daunting. Our desire at Journeymark Cards & Gifts is to help raise funds for families who have begun the adoption process. 10% of every item sold will go towards an adoption savings fund. Even if we can help one family adopt and bring one child home, this business will prove successful.
